If you really enjoy classic jrpgs from the 8 and 16 bit era (along with some modern qol improvements due to this being on a modern system), get dqxi. Dragon quest viii is the only dragon quest game i have played as well and i find it to be extremely dull. It has a few qol improvements, but it's still really mostly your traditional jrpg without huge innoventions.

If you really like saga games and/or bravely defualt along. Dq xi will drop in price way before octopath. People think it's one of the best of all time for some reason so if the whole series is like that dragon quest just may not be for me.

Octopath has fun combat, character/class customization, and a beautiful soundtrack that i'm surprised more people don't talk about, but the story is just 8 separate stories that aren't too special. The combat is great but the characters aren’t really tied to each other which is a major disappointment. However, it can get very repetitive, as every chapter has the same structure than the one before.
